Beauty is a shapeshifter, but beauty can also transform you
Article by Elena Travaini, translation by Jack Davidson Walmsley
Good morning dear readers, how are you? This morning, as I opened my window I was left enchanted by the panorama in front of me.
Autumn must be my favourite season with it’s warm colours and intense scents, if I close my eyes I can smell the aroma of roasted chestnuts, the sound of the fire crackling in the fireplace and the wind caressing the trees creating a rain of coloured leaves.
The image of a painting with the sound of a poem.
Poetry, quotations and positive phrases are precisely what I wish to talk to you about today.
Did you know that on the benches of some public parks and pedestrian areas in Milan you can find some real treasures? That’s right.
Marianna Vazzana, a thirty-six year old journalist and collaborator for the Italian Newspaper Il Giorno has been taking inspiration from the idea of Russian graphic designer Elena Zaharova, who currently lives in New York, deciding to transform the fallen autumn leaves into precious pieces of paper on which you can write quotations, poems or simple words.
She wants to be able to put a smile on people’s faces, to give hope or simply gift an emotion to the random person who will find this thought of hers resting on a bench somewhere.
Transforming something so simple that is often considered waste, into a work of art which is rich in meaning and communicating a positive message especially during these tough times.
Just like Marianna, I like to imagine the way these thoughts of hers can be carried by the wind. Think about it, a leaf, left somewhere on a bench… Where can it go? Who can find it? All of this is somehow, magical and appealing.
I find this gesture to be a loving demonstration of humanity and I hope that even you readers can be lucky enough to find one of her leaves; If you do, please let us know!
